Donal's film and camera work

Ok so I really am the worst blogger in the world. But hey I though I'd put an entry in anyway. We are still trying go get Donal's film made. We met a director who replied to an ad I put up. She has made a couple of feature films. We really wanted to get an experienced director together to make this movie because we will have a better chance of funding in the future.

Myself and Donal also decided to write again to Cherida who was supervising the script to ask advice about applying for funding for the film because she used to work for the film board. We will see what happens. I was also filming a health board video today in the Alexander in town hotel and will edit it too. Got 300 euros for it so it' was cool.

Aside from that I am still thinking of setting upa a media company. Have a meeting with the Terenure Enterprise Board Monday. Myself and Donal are also planning to shoot a couple of short films soon as well to build up some work we can show for applying for funding for something we could possibly direct out selves.

Final Cut Pro Advanced exam

I forgot say that I had my final cut pro exam last week for advanced level and i didn't pass. I was really that bothered because it is kind of a stupid multi choie exam anyway. I'm just concentrating now anyway on learning Avid media composer as well as learning how to use my new camera for filming.

Update on a Family Film

Myself and Donal have continued to try to get A Family film made. I'm not sure if I mentioned but I put an email on filmmakers network to get a producer and director for the film. We have on experienced director called Fiona Graham who is interested in the project. We are meeting her next week and were also told by a guy from another production company that we should try to get at least 250,000 euros for this film in order to get it made. With FIona on board this would be a possibility from the film board because she has experience directing features as it is. We have also had feedback from other parties that the story needs more plot. With that in mind I got Donal to write out a structure of the whole thing scene by scene to see if I can suggest some kind of injection into the plot or even just trying to make it better in some parts in order to make it a better movie. We will see what happens.

Film I was editing and setting up company

I thought I put text in this post earlier but it didn't seem to appear in the end. Anyway this is a sample of a film I have been editing recently. It's called the Fare and was shot on the Canon 5D Mark II. It looks amazing and I'm excited to be editing it cos it's great for my showreel. At the moment I am also thinking of setting up a company for filming and editing actors showreels, weddings and corporate videos. I went to the Citizens Information office in town and there is an incentive where you can keep social welfare for the next number of years while setting up your business. We will see what happens.

Family Film script

I've been contacting film companies over the past week about my friend's screenplay. It was shortlisted in the Jameson film festival last year in Dublin which is a great achievement. He is not in the film industry so I have been helping him out to try to get the film made. He is a freelance write and his website is www.donalnugent.com. Some companies have gotten back to me. I will edit the film if made. Neither of us want to direct though-well actually I would love to direct but I don't think either of us have enough experience doing that. We will see.

I was also editing for a guy who is setting up a company to edit actor's showreels but he was taking advantage of my time so I told him to go stuff it. Wanna set up my own media company. We will see....

Final Cut Advanced Editing

Currently studying for Final Cut Level 2-Advanced editing. I think I know a lot of it from watching the Lynda.com videos so hope I pass. I also bought a brand ne Canon 7D with a mic and tripod so I'm psyched about that. Really need to learn it and start using it. Thinking of setting up a little business editing and filming corporate videos, showreels and wedding and stuff. Haven't used this blog in months. So much has happened. Really gotta start using it. Gonna start writing something in it every day if I can ;-)

Forgot about my blog

I haven't written anything in this thing for ages because the truth is I forgot I had it. I've been busy working on loads of things. Just started a job today editing for Fine Gael-officially the editor of their election campaign videos. And it's paid which is great. It's for a month but I might be kept longer. I've also recently been editing a brilliant promo for a Drama series called 'The 'Darkness in Dublin', which I've done continuity for too. Been editing a film called Success for Screenstar pictures too have developed a good relationship with the director. Will put snippets of both these projects up in the coming days.

Creative Group

I replied to an ad on filmmakers network about an idea somebody had to start a create group-within which making films would be one endeavour. We met yesterday and the group are a really interesting bunch of people. We really hit if off and we are hoping to meet up next Thursday again. We discussed the possibility of starting up a company if things work out.

I also received a phone call form Mark O' Connor i.e. the director of Between the Canals-the feature I did storyboards and continuity on last year. He wants me to do storyboards again but he doesn't have funding yet. I said I wanted to wait until there was a good indication there would be finding. He said there should be a better indication around October/November time. So I'll have to wait and see what happens.

I'm also thinking of doing the final cut pro exam again to become Apple Certified. Would be really cool if I passed the exam so I'll have to wait and see. Later.

Finished video

It's been a crazy couple of weeks. I've mostly been finishing the music video-finally. It really went way beyond whet it should have though because the guys in the band were working so they were only able to meet every few days to do the edit. It was only when they came to my apartment and started to go through the edit with me they realised how finnicky and time consuming the whole process is. Ina ny event I've uploaded the making of the video here and the guys channel with the finished video can be seen here . Eoghan the write of the songs and guitarist has been emailing everybody the video link and somehow it has gotten attention on a Mexican radio station. You can see the link about it here . The guys want to make another video though. Apparently they have a new song.

Aside from that I have been contacting editing companies to try to get experience work in some post-production houses but nothing has come up so far. I also travelled to Cork last week to meet an American producer who is in the middle of making a tv show. I had been in touch with him a couple of weeks ago by phone and email. He is producing what I think is a documentary cooking show. I can't remember the exact nature of it but he is coming to Dublin around the 24th of August so I'm going to try to meet him then as well.

I've also been in touch with a guy who has an ad on filmmakers network for a creative group who seems like he eventually wants to start a company. It sounds very exciting. Will see what happens. Meeting a guy later to get dreamweaver lessons from in exchange for final cut pro lessons cos I'm doing a FAS course in web design involving dreamweaver at the moment. Hopefully it's beneficial. Didn't get anything in Ardmore.

Music video reshoot

Hey folks. Well, the last couple of days I've been doing the new cut of the music video and it's looking awesome! We reshot some scenes last weekend to help make the story more understandable. Can't wait to have it done and show it on here. Got a call from a company earlier today as well. They are looking for an editor for a tv show. They are an American company based in Cork and seem to have a deal with a TV channel so it sounds great. They will be in Dublin in a couple of weeks so hope to meet them then. Talk to you all later :-)

Music video and updates

I met Stephen from the music video yesterday to tak abou how we are going to finish it because the narrative doesn't make complete sense as of now. We decided we are going to shoot a couple of bits. We also decided on a new editing structure . I'm gonna meet him during the week to film a couple of bits and then hopefully get into a new edit and get it finished. Bea is back from Spain on the 15th and said she will sort out the release forms because the details on the ones already signed were wrong. I actually emailed her yesterday because I'm thinking of doing the release forms myself. I wanted to ask if she has templates I can use cos I'm tired of waiting to get this whole video done.

I spoke to the guys in Ardmore last week again as well about work in the props department and they said there might be work in the coming weeks. Will see.

I also went to FAS the other day about doing a web design course. There seems to be loads of jobs in that area. I think it's a really good move because I'm finding it so hard to get work. I think its something I will really like as well because it has to do with design as well. If nothing else it will give me a chance to learn some adobe software which will be good for graphic/art department jobs. The course is in Finglas and lasts ten weeks. it's just a basic web design couse with no certification. the more advanced course is apparently hard to get into though. You have to make some websites and some design stuff during the course to build a portfolio to be able to enter the more advanced course. Will see how it turns out.

I've been thinking of studying to take the final cut pro certification exam again as well. I think it would be a really good move to become apple certified for getting jobs etc. It's the editing programme I know best so it would really make sense. I could then go ahead and study the final cut pro advanced book which will be great for getting jobs! That's all for now. Later

Video editing and weddings

So I lost the contract with the wedding company for editing cos the guys decided to do the editing himself. Was a bit pissed off but I got paid for the one I did anyway so that's something. Still putting the finishing touches to the music video edit. Will be meeting with the guys in the band to do a final cut next week when I finally get the B-Cam footage. I finally got the last release forms signed yesterday as well but it turns out that Bea the producer put the wrong names on it-Stephen Holland instead of Stephen Holohan. I don't know if it matters but we may need to get everyone to sign them again.

Music video edit

Still working on the edit for the music video. it has proven a nightmare because the lighting is so bad. I've been adding light and tint filters to improve the whole thing. I'm meeting the wedding video guy today as well so he can have a look at my work to see if it's good. Brie from BP Productions is coming over today as well to make DVDs for the film for it to finally go into festivals.

Editing wedding videos...

Been working like a trojan today. Was editing one video for the first wedding video guy, then started the second. My printer was giving me a nightmare cos I couldn't scan the image to put on the DVD cover for the first video guy. I put another one on instead. Just going through DVD studio pro now to learn how to make professional DVDs.

I'm meeting Rob the second camera guy on the music video tomorrow as well. He is going to digitise the B-cam footage so I can add it at last to the music video. The hassle it has taken to get that footage is unbelievable. Anyway hope to get it done this weekend and meet the guys in the band to do a final cut. Also, I didn't pass my Motion exam.

Life in Motion...

Didn't pass my Motion exam but I don't mind. I still learned a lot and have the course on my C.V. The pass rate is pretty high. Just burning a couple of DVDs of a film I edited for BP Productions. It's going into festivals Friday so it has to be doen asap. I gave Brie Quicktime files of the movie the last time she was in the house doing the final cut of the film but she wasn't aware of this. Bit of a panic to get the films off to the festivals on time. Met a guy yesterday too about editing a wedding video as well. Paid. Then out of the blue a wedding video company calls me as well to ask can I meet them to edit wedding videos for them as well. They have 15 videos they need me to editi and it's all paid so happy days.

17 inch macbook pro

Forgot to mention that I got a 17 inch macbook pro too. Means I can do color grading cos the other mac didn't have a screen resolution high enough.

Motion exam preparation

FInally finished studying the Motion book and now have to go over the questions to learn for the exam. There is so much to learn but it frustrates me how there is so much more to learn in the other programmes as well and I don't know it yet. I really want to know compressor, color, soundtrack pro and DVD studio pro as well. Would really help me get jobs. I'm supposed to be meeting a guy later to edit a wedding video though. Hope it works out. Could do with the money. Still trying to log and capture the footage from the music video as well. So want to get it edited-I'm looking forward to it.

BP Showreel

Did this showreel for BP Productions. I think it looks good.

Apple Motion exam and editing film final touches

Been Studying like a mad thing for motion graphics exam on Wednesday. It's kind of bad timing as I want to edit the music video but I just really want to get it out of the way and try to pass the exam. Will be hard to pass but great if I do. Was editing the final version of Confessions with Brie in the apartment yesterday as well so it's finally done. It's heading around to festivals soon around the country. There is a still of it here.

Music video shoot

Been so busy the last week preparing for music video I directed. We shot in the Dragon, a tarot card reading shop in Temple Bar, and apartment in town and the bridge near the IFSC. Exhausted but was so much fun. Finally I went to Ardmore to get the fourth signature on the form to join the union as well and went to the SIPTU offices to give the form in yesterday as well. They said they would send the joining form out to me in a couple of days in the post. Can se some pics of the video shoot here. Been trying to log the footage but can't get it working. Andrew the DP is meeting me tomorrow to help me get it going.

Ardmore blues

Went to Ardmore studios yesterday to get a form for the union signed by a guy in the props department. I felt as if I may aswell j=try to win the Lotto as get a job there. I feel so pissed off. Nobody had clue who I was, what I was doing there, how hard I've worked, how much of a loan I'm trying to pay off, what talent I have-and they shouldn't because I haven't hung out there but it still felt so hard to get a job. The only reason I went for props is because the secretary of the production manager thought there were jobs there but I'm not so sure. She thought I might be better being a trainee production runner or something. I will see.

Tomorrow I'm meeting one of the actresses that are going to be in the music video as well as the costume girl and one of the production assistants who is helping her out. Then I'm meeting the director of photography at 3pm to go through all the photography stuff. I really want to make this video as exciting as possible but because it's low budget I don't know if it's going to work out that way. Anyway I hope it turns out cool.....

Music video

In the middle of directing and producting a music video for a band called trash valentina. This is the link for the ban'd myspace page http://www.myspace.com/trashvalentina. This is the link for the art direction ideas http://picasaweb.google.com/paulheary/MusicVideoResearch?authkey=Gv1sRgCIb0trirp_rP6QE#. SO much work to do but it's a really fin video. Haven't written anything in here for ages cos I've been so busy. I'm still doing editing work for BP Productions. I'm editing a film for them for free but they said they are gonna pay me for music videos and films soon so fingers crossed. I called Ardmore studios about working on Camelot which is about to start soon too. It's replacing the Tudors. I spoke to a guy in the props department about a job. I have to join the union in Siptu apparently so I'm gonna try and do that Monday. I've desided to go ahead and study for the Motion programme I'm studying for as well and do hte next exam for that in Filmbase in the city centre in the middle of June. I got funding from social welfare for that so I'm gonna try to study hard for the exam and pass it. Camelot won'r be starting til about June 28th and the music video shoots 7th and 8th of May so I should have plenty of time between now and then. Fingers crossed :-)

BP Productions editing

I haven't written anything for a while and loads has been happening. I'm editing some stuff for this http://www.bpproductions.tv/?page_id=58 production company at the moment. It's not paid but it's great for my showreel. it's for a TV programme the company are trying to sell to a TV channel. It's basically a music show where up and coming bands are interviewed. They are hoping to broadcast the first pilot on the web by April 2nd. I'm editing my third artist at the moment and it's going really well. I wish I could upload something but I can't yet.

Brian who I am making the other film with came to the apartment today as well to discuss everything. I wanted to make the film in a studio but he found a great location apparently in Dalkey. He is gonna meet me this weekend or early next week to go over how he wants the storyboards.

I also applied for a new production that has been given the go ahead by HBO in the states. It's a period programme called The Game of Thrones and will be filmed in northern ireland this summer. I got their phone number as well so I'm going to haunt them for a job.

I'm going out onThursday as well to a fundraiser for my friend Constanze's new production company as well which is quite cool. I really admire her ambition and have spoken to her about possibly working together in the future soon again. Later.

(P.S. Kirsten didn't return my email-yet. I emailed her before about getting experience editing in the factory but she didn't reply yet. I finished the fourth draft of my script too and I'm gonna pay a guy to see what he thinks of it.)

The Factory

I texted Kirsten from the factory today to check in with her and she sai they are still waiting for funding. I asked could I email her about some stuff and she said sure. I mailed about my script and about maybe getting into editing with some of the guys from the factory. Will wait to see what she says. She has been very nice to me actually. Have an interview in Drogheda tomorrow morning for a TV company. It's unpaid but would still be a great opportunity. Hope it goes well.

The Last Furlong

I called the Production manager of The Last Furlong last night to ask about work again. It's the new film being produced in Ardmore Studios. I called her a couple of weeks ago and she said they were going into prep in March. Now she said to call her back in two weeks again cos they are still not in prep. So maybe something will come out of this-she sounds like a very nice woman.

I also have an interview for a FAS job scheme in a TV production company in Drogheda on Tuesday as well but I forgot I have my Motion course so I had to text this morning. The girl in the company said it's fine and she's gonna call me tomorrow.

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy/Motion

I haven't written in this blog for so long cos so much has happened-apart from the fact that my computer has been out of action til today cos my hard drive had to be replaced. I was working as continuity person on the film Fumbing Towards Ecstacy with Ego Trim Pictures on Monday and Tuesday. It was a good shoot-early mornings but got paid so happy. Tried to save some pics from the company website to post up here but can't.

Aside from that I decided to buy the new Final Cut Studio for my mac cos I need the new version of Motion for the training CD that accompanies the book for it to work. My course starts this Tuesday and goes til Thursday. There is supposed to be an exam on Thursday as well but they are allowing me have it at another time cos I'm just new to the programme.

I'm also working for one day on a Drink Aware ad on the 15th of March as continuity person and getting paid for that as well so things seem to be getting better. Was meant to do storyboards as well but the camera crew are doing their own now. Will have to see what happens from there. Still hoping for work on one of these factory films from April. Thinking of ringing Ardmore about a job on this new feature film called 'The Last Furlong' that's in prep this month as well. And still continuing to learn more editing and Adobe stuff to find a job in these areas. Fingers crossed.

Ardmore/Paralympics documentary

Lots of news. I called the production manager of a new feature that will be in prep in Ardmore studios in March called 'The Last Furlong'. She asked to send my C.V. and I did along with other links etc. Will see what happens.

Aside from that the guy who I was emailing about a few months ago in the States about writing a scrip suddenly emailed me again and we are talking about doing something again. I also called the director of the film I wanted to work in the UK and his film has been shelved financially-at least for now.

I've started editing properly the documentary about dad's trip to the paralympics as well.

AutoCad/Dreamweaver

Was speaking to Kirsten today to ask if they are back at the factory and they are not. They are waiting for some surveyors or something to look the place over and hope to be back soon. In the meantime I'm studying Dreamweaver online to maybe make websites as a job or something on the side. I'm also starting the AutoCas course in Finglas tomorrow which will be a really good course I think for getting jobs. I'm half thinking of calling Ed Aldreidge about the film I called him about a couple of months ago but I would need to be in Ireland for the AutoCad course. I've put it off so many times. I shouldn't put it off again but chancing my arm at getting a role on that film would be brilliant as well...I might chance my arm yet.

Fumbling Towards Ecstacy

Got a job as continuity supervisor on a short called 'Fumbling Towards Ecstacy' shooting in March 1st and 2nd. Was meant to be art director but they got someone else. Anyway I'm really happy to do continuity. It's paid work as well.

Ardmore studios production week

Just found this video I thought was lost. It's a documentary a guy from my class in college made of production week in Ardmore studios. I've edited it down to about three minutes cos it's too long to upload otherwise. You'll get the idea. Enjoy! :)

Short film cancelled

So the short film I was working on as art director got cancelled. I'm mad. On another note I was speaking with Kirsten Sheridan from the factory. I asked could I email a C.V. and some examples of art work etc. and she said sure. I sent them and she liked the stuff. She said they hope to start shooting some stuff in April so there may be a job for me. I'm starting the FAS course in AutoCad on the 26th of this month as well which should be more art department qualifications. I'm also meeting social welfare on February 3rd to ask about funding for more editing courses. I hope I get it. Been calling around film productions too and everyone seems crewed up. All I can do for now.

Factory delays

I texted Kirsten a couple of days ago saying I hope to be back in the factory in a couple of days. She texted back saying she would see me Monday and that she is in Los Angeles-which I was quite impressed about. I'm thinking she is there talking film with some Hollywood types. I just texted the building manager to see if I can go to the factory today but got no reply yet. Got a text from Emily who I was working with and she said she thinks they're on hold til Monday (today being Friday). Very boring. Ah well, will all hopefully work out :-)

Art director short film

Tomorrow I have a meeting with a crew for a short film. I am art director on it. My friend Constanze is line producer and first A.D. Hope it goes well. Part of is is based in Paris. It's about a boy and girl in a relationship. It's a really nice story called 'As you Are'. Some of the crew will be going to Paris to film that part of it but I won't.

Didn't get the job

I had the interview for the production assistant job yesterday in Fastnet films. They feel I am more suited to work on a set and they are probably right. They feel I can work on some films in the factory place I was working in before Christmas so I'll most likely be heading back there. I'm sure it'll work out :-)

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Production assistant interview

I got a call yesterday from Fastnet films about the interview for the production assistant position-they are back after the Christmas break-finally! I'm really happy. I saw an apartment around the corner from the factory as well yesterday. My friend and I are hoping to move into it so it looks like things are starting to work out. I'm needles to say very happy ;-)

Music video

I finally did my first proper edit. I've posted it here. It's just a mish-mash of music videos. Will have the extra footage for the archery documentary for the paralympics soon too so hope to have that finished too. Tomorrow is January 4th and everyone is back to work-including I'm presuming the film company I have the interview for. I'm nervous about the interview-that is if they get in contact at all. I'll call tehm anyway if they don't. I'm sure I'll be wanted in the factory if I don't get the job. I'm doing a course in autocad this month with FAS as well which will come in seriously handy if I am a set designer for any films. That's about it right now.

Paralympics Archery documentary

So over Christmas I've been trying to edit this documentary about my dad playing archery for Ireland in the paralympics. I had to buy a new programme just to get the video to import into final cut but now the audio isn't working and I can't figure out why. I still edited some of the footage I have just for practice. I also-like the bimbo I am-discovered that all the final cut studio manuals are also located in the help section of each programme so I've downloaded them all into a folder and I fully intend to learn everything in them-eventually. Can't believe it's almost 2010...

Back in the factory

Was in the factory working today again-kind of a last hurrah before Christmas. Was sick with a bad stomach the last few days after eating something really bad so couldn't go back til today. Did some seriousy hard work!-lifting heavy speakers, cabinets etc-it was harder than it sounds. Anyway I think it paid off cos met some of the directors of the place-including Lance Daly-director of Kisses. He is also in Fastnet-the company I am supposed to have the interview for re the production assitant job early in the new year-which was a lucky thing! Got on well with Kirsten i.e. Jim Sheridan's daughter as well and she said she hopes to give us work in the new year. So things are looking up. Here's hoping they work out :-)

More factory work

Was painting in the factory the other day to help out with this film crew. It was fun but the place is a death tap. One of the guys fell through the floor and almost killed himself! Was off today to get all my Christmas presents. Will be in Monday and Tuesday helping with furniture transport for the factory. The things I do to get a job.

Facory work

I've spent the last two days cleaning and clearing stuff in the factory in town the filmmakers are using to make films in the new year. The place is a complete dump but it's a fantastic opportunity for me. Jim Sheridan's daughter is one of three directors who will be setiing up shop there. I was speaking to her today and she is so nice. It's a big operation. It seems like the space will have a multi-purpose purpose if you will-from reghearsals, to actual shooting, to casting, to wardrobe etc. The casting department were setting up today. I am supposed to still have an interview for the production assistant job with fastnet films but if I don't or I don't get it I would love some kind of a job with this crowd in the factory. I feel really ambitious now and feel like this could be a fantastic opportunity. I hope it all goes well. I finished the structure of the script and sent it to Cherida as well i.e. the girl who is reading my script. She said she will have a look over it during the Christmas break.

Sunday, December 13, 2009

I spent all day going through an excel sheet trying to restructure the plot of my script. My head is in bits. I don't actually know how I'm gonna make everything work. I want to get it finished anyway in the next couple of days so I can concentrate on other things. Tomorrow I'm helping out in the factory for Fastnet films. According to my stars forecast for tomorrow a colleague is gonna be irate or highly strung and I will be caught off guard. I hope to God it doesn't come true!

Fastnet film factory

A woman from Fastnet films called me to help prepare factory space for some movies that are going to be made in the new year. She got my number off the receptionist I have the interview with this week-at least I hope I still have an interview. It will be dogs work and unpaid but hope to 'get in with the gang' and might get some paid work in the new year. Just fixing the structure of my of my script at the moment. Pain :-(

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

Film script

Got Final draft from my friend when I got my mac so spent all day tidying up the text of the script I'm working on. Had to paste it in from the pdf. For some reason when I installed Final draft Celtx was over ridden and I can't use it which sucks. Anyway I'm hoping to have the script tidied up by the end of tomorrow and then finish an excel spreadsheet with the new structure. It's called Karma Addiction. I think it's quite a catchy title actually. The girl who used to work for the film board who is reading it said she would have a look over the structure during the Christmas free of charge which is sweet!

Got an interview with Fastnet films next week for the production assistant job. SOunds like a great opportunity. Got some job postings in FAS too-there's actually some really cool positions relevant to the film industry so gonna apply :-)

Art direction

I finally read the script I will be art director of when it shoots in January. It's for a short film. Had a chat with a friend of mine about it who is the first AD today. I also received an email reply from Fastnet films about a production assistant job. I don't even remember applying for the job. Would be cool to get it. I guess I'll hear from them tomorrow.

Set design

At the bottom of the post you can see the set design I did that wasn't chosen for FIngal Community TV. It's completely wacky but I thought it would have been cool. See what you think. The pictures that influenced its design are to the left. They are from a store in Dublin.

God I'm thick

Was just reading over a previous entry here where I was actually wondering if the company I could buy a mac from in the Philipines was a legitimate company. God I'm thick! Won't even go down the road of how that turned out. In other news my Adobe creative suite arrived today too. I'm hoping to learn some skills to maybe get some jobs in the art department of film or TV shows. It's got Dreamweaver, Indesign, photoshop, Illustrator, bridge-the works. So I'm really happy about that. Getting Final Cut installed on my mac tonight too so can't wait about that as well.
